Tips to Keep Animals Off Your Roof

Breianna Dahl • Apr 15, 2021
Let’s talk about little critters. Squirrels, birds, raccoons, you name it, can cause damage to your roofing system. If given the opportunity a critter can peel up shingles and start chewing on the roof deck.  Let alone the ability they have to put holes into the soffit or fascia. If a bird chooses a roof as the perfect place to make a nest vents can get blocked, or gutters get clogged. Not to mention the damage that can be caused if the creatures get into the building. Long story short, little critters can cause a lot of damage if they are not deterred.

The good news is that there are things you can do to keep your roof safe.

1) Trim Your Trees

When tree branches hang over the roof it gives animals the perfect opportunity to get onto your roof. Trees can cause damage to a roof on their own, but many animals rely on having trees close to buildings for them to get on and off of the roof safely. By taking some time in the spring to trim trees whose branches are close or overhanging, you take away access to your roof.

2) Get Maintenance

Having annual, or bi-annual maintenance allows any roof damage to be caught early. When maintenance is done, the roofer is looking at many of the locations on your roof where animal damage can be found, so you can breathe easy knowing that if it exists, it will be caught. Beyond that, any damage that could attract animals can also be found and corrected before any animals get the idea of making themselves at home.

3) Reseal Your Shingles

Out of place, shingles can attract animals to your roof. Thunderstorms, hurricanes, snowstorms, and windy days can all lead to shingles moving out of place. After any powerful weather, it is always a good idea to take a brief look at your roof to see if there is any noticeable damage. Even one shingle out of place is a sign that you need some repairs. Call up your trusted roofing contractor and have them come out to make a few repairs.

4) Keep Trash Contained

For some animals trash equals food and having your trash can close to your house means you are attracting some animals. Raccoons and rats are known for being attracted to trash. Having a trash can is pretty normal so making sure that the trash is covered, in a garage, or far from your house or building can keep unwanted animals from your roof.

5) Add Barriers

Some animals are amazing climbers or jumpers and no matter what you do to your trees they may continue to find a way onto the roof.  If this is a problem then look into ways that keep them out of the yard entirely. Think about adding a fence or other determents to keep animals as far away from your roof as possible.

6) Look into Metal Roofing

Metal roofing is great for many reasons, and one reason is the durability of the material. When it comes to unwanted critters causing roof problems, metal roofing limits the number of places on a roof where an animal can cause damage.
If putting metal on the entire roof isn’t an option you can add metal sheeting to many of the vulnerable locations to protect your roof. While metal roofing does deter a lot of animal damage, it isn’t a guarantee that animals won’t damage the roof.
