Throughout my life, my parents always gave me the option to choose. However, they never have told me what to choose. In fact, there have been plenty of times where I wanted them to tell me what the best choice was. Instead, they just listed all my options with the pros and cons of each. I have been annoyed by the ritual of never telling me what to choose and leaving the decision to my semi-mature self. How am I supposed to know if I should start a retirement fund now or wait until I’m debt free? How would I know if one job offer is better than another? How should I know the best way to deal with a car dealer? I spent years wishing that my parents would just give me the answer to some of life’s decisions when in reality, they were teaching me a powerful lesson.
The more options you have, the greater your power.
When you have options, you have the power to decide. It is a huge responsibility and one that shouldn’t be taken lightly. But it’s true, options equal power. While it may seem easy to leave decisions in the hands of others, the moment you give someone the power to choose is the moment you are no longer in control. This is a philosophy that rings true in many circumstances. By not leveraging your option to choose a different job, you give your current employer the power to control you. By not choosing a budget to stick with, you give marketing tactics power to control what you buy. By not understanding an industry, you give them the power to tell you what needs to happen.
Options do not always look the same in every situation, but I promise that the option is always there. For example, when car shopping you always have the option of doing the research before you head to a dealership. That research gives you a basic knowledge of the car you are looking for, as well as the average price for that car. You also have the option of trusting that the car dealer will tell you all you need to know. You have the option of using your research as leverage against what the car dealer is telling you. You have the option to lease a car, loan a car, or buy a car. You can decide not to work with a specific car dealer. You just have to remember that you are in control of the situation, and you have many options as to how to proceed.
The roofing industry is no different.
The longer I work in the roofing industry, the more surprised I am at the lack of understanding there is about roofing.
This may come from the fact that every time I’ve bought something expensive, I make sure to know as much as possible about what I bought. So, it confuses me that after spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on a roof, people just let it sit. The way roofs are treated would be like getting a cavity filled at the dentist, and then not following anything the dentist says. While most people might not brush their teeth twice a day and floss daily, some semblance of proper hygienics is practiced. With roofs, it’s like getting the cavity filled and then never brushing, and then being surprised when another cavity forms.
Roofing has options and knowing those options take the power away from the roofing contractor and gives the power to the customer. As a company, Roof Medics has come to understand the power of options and we have made the decision to provide our customers with their options. We have decided to educate our customers on their roof. We looked at our options and made a decision that gives the power over to our customers. So here are the four main options you have when it comes to your roof.
Repair: When you have a roof that is leaking or has other problems, step one would be to see if repairs can be made to buy you time. Repairs are not permeant, but they cost the least. The best chance at catching repairs early is by relying on maintenance.
Maintenance: Maintenance is a powerful tool that, when used properly, can extend the life of a roof. Maintenance is when a roof is inspected at least once, if not twice, a year. When a roof is inspected early enough, it allows for roof issues to be addressed at the earliest time, allowing for repairs to be proactive instead of reactive.
Restoration: Restoration is another powerful tool that allows for an old roof to be covered. For roofs that can be restored instead of replaced, it helps the customer save money and doesn’t hurt the building. Restoration can be done on roofs without having to tear off the old roof. This method is not only cheaper than replacement, but it also takes less time.
Replacement: Replacement is sometimes necessary. It could be that the roofing material used isn’t able to be restored, or the roof is too far damaged to be able to properly be restored.
Replacement includes having the roof torn off and an entirely new roof getting put on.
With these options, you have the power to decide what happens to your roof. This power includes deciding how your budget works, how the work is done, and who you allow to do the work.
Now you have the option of how to use this information.
